The 2026-27 NBA season does not hand you a slow build-up. It hands you four dates worth circling — and three of them land before the calendar turns.
When does the 2026-27 NBA season start, and which dates actually matter?
Opening Week runs Tuesday, Oct. 20 through Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, with nine nationally televised games. The Emirates NBA Cup tips off Friday, Oct. 30 and crowns its champion Dec. 11 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Christmas Day brings five games on Friday, Dec. 25. And NBA Rivals Week packs twelve games into Tuesday, Jan. 26 – Saturday, Jan. 30, 2027. Every time below is Eastern.
Opening Week: nine games in four days
Tuesday, Oct. 20 – Friday, Oct. 23, 2026
The league front-loads the schedule. Opening night is a tripleheader: Boston visits Detroit in an afternoon matinee, Philadelphia goes to New York for the Knicks' ring ceremony, and Oklahoma City opens its title defense in San Antonio. From there the week rolls through Miami, Los Angeles and Cleveland.
Two things are worth noticing in the shape of this slate. First, seven of the nine games feature at least one team that reached the 2026 playoffs. Second, four franchises appear twice — the Celtics, Knicks, 76ers and Thunder — which is the league telling you who it expects to sell tickets in October.

Christmas Day: five games, twelve hours
Friday, Dec. 25, 2026
Christmas Day is the one date the NBA never leaves to chance, and this year's five-game card opens at noon and closes with a 10:30 p.m. tip. Four of the five matchups are cross-conference, and the middle game — Philadelphia at Los Angeles — is the only one that does not involve a team from the 2026 conference finals.
The most interesting wrinkle is the noon game. San Antonio at New York is a rematch of both the 2025 Emirates NBA Cup Championship Game and the 2026 NBA Finals, which means the league is opening its biggest holiday window with a rivalry it spent six months building.

Rivals Week: twelve games, five days
Tuesday, Jan. 26 – Saturday, Jan. 30, 2027
Rivals Week is a marketing idea built on a simple observation: the games people actually argue about are not always the games with the best records. So the league schedules the grudges instead. The 2027 edition runs five days and twelve games, with the marquee slots spread across NBC, ESPN, Prime Video and ABC.
Three of the twelve games are repeats of 2026 playoff series. Denver and Minnesota meet again on Jan. 27, Detroit and Cleveland re-open their first-round argument on the same night, and the week closes with Los Angeles at New York at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

The Emirates NBA Cup: how the groups work
Tips off Friday, Oct. 30, 2026 · Championship Dec. 11
The in-season tournament returns for a fourth year, and the format has not changed. All 30 teams are sorted into five three-team tiers within their conference based on the previous season's standings, then one team from each tier is drawn into each group. That is why no group can hold two of a conference's top three teams — and why the draw, not the schedule maker, decides who gets a soft landing.
Each team plays the other four in its group once. The six group winners plus one wild card from each conference advance to a single-elimination knockout round. The quarterfinals are Dec. 4–5, the semifinals Dec. 8 and/or 9, and the championship game is Friday, Dec. 11 — this year at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the 9,100-seat Butler University arena that hosted the 1954 Indiana state final that inspired Hoosiers. It is the first time the title game leaves Las Vegas.
One historical note worth carrying into October: the 2025-26 Knicks became the first team to win the Emirates NBA Cup and the NBA championship in the same season. Before that, the pattern ran the other way around — the 2023 Pacers reached the Cup final and then the conference finals, the 2024 Thunder lost the Cup final and then won the title.

Do NBA Cup games count in the regular season standings?
Yes. Group play and the knockout rounds are regular-season games and count in the standings. The championship game is the exception — it does not count toward either team's record.
