NBA 2026-27 Season Preview: What to Watch Before Opening Night

Season Preview  ·  NBA 2026-27

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, the NBA will open a season the way it never has before: three games on one network in one night. The first is a matchup of the East's two best regular-season teams. The second is a championship banner ceremony in New York that the city has waited 53 years to hold. The third is a rematch of a conference finals that went the distance. But if you follow basketball for the clothing — and a lot of people do — the most interesting story of this season was already written in July, when three of the league's most recognisable players changed the number on their back.

When does the 2026-27 NBA season start?

Opening night is Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, with a three-game slate on NBC and Peacock: Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons (3 p.m. ET), Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks (7 p.m. ET, following the Knicks' championship banner ceremony) and Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs (9:30 p.m. ET). Training camps open Sept. 29 and the first preseason games arrive Oct. 3. The Knicks begin the season as defending champions after beating the Spurs 4-1 in the 2026 NBA Finals.

Ring night in New York, and what a banner does to a jersey

The first championship raised at Madison Square Garden since 1973.

The Knicks closed out the 2026 Finals in five games, beating San Antonio 94-90 on the road in Game 5 behind 45 points from Jalen Brunson, the Finals MVP. It was New York's first title in 53 years, and the numbers behind it are the kind that stick to a franchise: nine road wins in a single postseason, tying the 1995 Houston Rockets for the most ever, and the most-watched Finals since 1998.

All of that becomes ceremony on Oct. 20, roughly half an hour before tip-off, when the banner goes into the rafters and the rings go on fingers. It is the last act of a championship, and it changes something about the merchandise. A jersey worn during a title run is a product; the same jersey with a Finals patch on the shoulder is a document. That is why the version of a champion's uniform carrying the Finals mark sells differently from the version that does not — and why the store's Knicks basketball jerseys, including the 2026 NBA Finals Champions editions already in stock, are the season's most loaded piece of clothing before a single game has been played.

The summer's real headline was the numbers

Four of the league's most recognisable players changed team — and the digit on their back is what fans will argue about.

Roster moves get reported as contracts and picks. The part that lasts is the number, because a number is the shortest way to say who a player is. This offseason produced four worth knowing cold.

Giannis Antetokounmpo: 34 → 7

After 13 seasons in Milwaukee, Giannis Antetokounmpo was traded to the Miami Heat on July 6, closing the longest-running saga of the summer. The Heat also received Bobby Portis; Milwaukee received Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware, Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft (Nate Ament), unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 pick swap and a 2033 second-rounder.

At his introductory press conference he explained the number: he is switching to No. 7 to leave No. 34 with Milwaukee. He leaves holding most of the franchise's career records, a 2021 championship and two MVP awards. Some numbers belong to a city rather than a player, and 34 is now one of them — which is exactly the kind of decision that makes a uniform code worth following.

Klay Thompson: 31 → 11

Thompson signed with Miami in late August after a buyout with Dallas, and he is going back to No. 11 — the number he made famous over 12 seasons in Golden State. He wore 31 with the Mavericks because Kyrie Irving already had 11. His explanation, given to Erik Spoelstra on camera, is the best jersey-number story of the year: he grew up at 11 Paverstone Lane, he was the 11th pick of the 2011 draft, and “K” is the 11th letter of the alphabet. He has 2,899 career three-pointers, fourth-most in league history, and he turns 36 before the season starts.

LeBron James: No. 23, fourth franchise

At 41, LeBron James signed a two-year deal with Philadelphia in late July and will wear No. 23 — the number he wore in Cleveland and, later, in Los Angeles. He is the NBA's all-time leading scorer and a four-time champion with three franchises; a title in Philadelphia would make him the first player to win one with four different teams.

Jaylen Brown: No. 7, and the first new jersey in ten years

Philadelphia's other summer arrival came on July 6, when the 76ers sent Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-rounders to Boston for Jaylen Brown. Brown kept No. 7 — and said out loud what that meant. Unboxing the shirt on a livestream in August, he admitted it was the first NBA jersey other than Boston's he had ever put on in ten years of playing.

That is the cleanest illustration of how jersey identity works. Brown's number did not travel because he wanted a fresh start; it travelled because the number is his, and the franchise around it changed instead. Two of the summer's biggest names now wear No. 7, in different conferences — a reminder that numbers are only unique inside a team. Across the league they repeat constantly, which is why the story is always the combination: number, player, city, era — the same digit appears under a dozen different names in the store's NBA player jerseys. Philadelphia now pairs James (23) and Brown (7) with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, and carries 34 nationally televised games, tied for the league's most and a franchise record. The 76ers were 45-37 last season, the No. 7 seed, and beat Boston in seven games before being swept by the Knicks in the second round.

Opening night, three games, three questions

The first night of the season is unusually well constructed.

Celtics at Pistons, 3 p.m. ET. The East's top two regular-season seeds a year ago, and two teams that would rather forget how last season ended. Detroit finished first in the conference and lost a seven-game second-round series to Cleveland. Boston lost a seven-game first-round series to Philadelphia — the series that made the Jaylen Brown trade imaginable. It is also a clean stylistic contrast: Boston's volume three-point shooting against Detroit's interior game.

76ers at Knicks, 7 p.m. ET. The marquee game, and the only one with real ceremony attached. New York gets its rings, then faces the roster that the rest of the East spent the summer trying to match. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown make their Philadelphia debuts in the loudest building in the league, on the night the building is celebrating a title they are trying to take.

Thunder at Spurs, 9:30 p.m. ET. Game 8 of last season's Western Conference Finals, in effect. San Antonio won that series in seven games on the way to the Finals, and both teams return essentially intact: Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. Oklahoma City's Williams was limited in that series, which is part of why the rematch matters.

A rookie class that gets its first numbers

Three players, three very different landing spots.

AJ Dybantsa went No. 1 overall to Washington after one season at BYU in which he averaged 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists, and after winning gold and tournament MVP at the 2025 FIBA Under-19 World Cup. Unusually for a first overall pick, he joins a roster with established veterans — the Wizards added Trae Young and Anthony Davis last season — so his first jersey will not be the only one in the building that sells.

Darryn Peterson went second to Utah, joining Ace Bailey, Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. Cameron Boozer, the son of two-time All-Star Carlos Boozer, went third to Memphis and into a full rebuild. And Nate Ament, taken 13th by Miami, was immediately rerouted to Milwaukee as part of the Giannis trade — a rookie who will debut in a uniform that was collateral in the biggest deal of the summer. First-year players sell shirts in proportion to how quickly they become recognisable; Dybantsa has the head start.

City Edition turns ten, and every team goes backwards

The uniform story of the season, and the one to plan your budget around.

Nike took over the NBA's uniforms in 2017 and introduced the City Edition the following season. For the programme's tenth anniversary in 2026-27, the league is not launching new concepts — it is reissuing old ones. Every team is expected to bring back a City Edition or Earned Edition design from the past nine years, with an added anniversary detail: an iridescent finish on the Nike Swoosh or Jordan Brand Jumpman, and the NBA logo moved onto the back of the neck.

Several returns are already confirmed or well reported, and they are a good map of what the programme has meant:

Spurs — the 1990s “Fiesta” colour palette, the most-requested revival in the league.

Hawks — the 2020-21 Martin Luther King Jr. tribute uniform.

Nets — the 2018-19 “Bed-Stuy” design, a Brooklyn-specific piece of graphic design.

Wizards — the 2022-23 cherry blossom jersey, tied to Washington's spring festival and the DC flag.

76ers — the 2017-18 parchment “Phila” script uniform, rooted in the Declaration of Independence, now out again in the same season LeBron James arrives.

Trail Blazers — the 2019-20 City Edition, and Pacers — the 2025-26 “Moments Mixtape” set, which was already a tribute to the team's own design history.

The league-wide unveiling came in mid-September; the jerseys are expected in stores in January 2027. If you have followed this programme from the beginning, the anniversary collection is the closest thing basketball has to a retrospective exhibition you can wear — and the store keeps the strand in its City Edition basketball jerseys, alongside the older eras the programme keeps borrowing from in the throwback collection.

Christmas jerseys are back

For the first time since the league changed outfitters.

The NBA is restoring a dedicated Christmas Day uniform for 2026-27 — the first time since Nike took over the contract in 2017, with a release expected in November and December. It is a small thing with a long memory: Christmas uniforms were a fixture of the 2000s and 2010s, and the December slate itself remains the league's showcase, with five games on ABC and ESPN.

This year's schedule is unusually narrative. San Antonio at New York opens the day at noon as a Finals rematch — and the only regular-season game Wembanyama plays at Madison Square Garden. Miami at Boston follows at 2:30, with Giannis and the rebuilt Heat against the Celtics. Philadelphia at Los Angeles at 5 p.m. sends LeBron James back to the building he won a title in, against a Lakers team now built around Luka Doncic and, in all likelihood, his son Bronny — which would be the first father-son meeting in an NBA game.

Four teams changed what they wear

Beyond the City Edition anniversary, the league's most visual offseason in years.

  • Minnesota has a new primary logo and three new uniforms — two light-based Association and Icon sets plus a dark Statement — timed to a roster that now includes LaMelo Ball alongside Anthony Edwards.
  • Houston released a redesigned red-and-black set in June, with Kevin Durant and Alperen Şengün in the reveal, while Brooklyn brings back a retro look to mark both its 60th anniversary and 50 years since the ABA-NBA merger.
  • Indiana enters its 60th season with a Statement Edition built on pinstripes first used in 1997, and gets Tyrese Haliburton back after he missed all of 2025-26 with a torn Achilles.

What to actually watch

Four things that will still matter in April.

  • The number 7 in two cities. Giannis in Miami and Jaylen Brown in Philadelphia are both betting on a fresh context with a familiar digit. Watch which one becomes shorthand for the season.
  • Whether Philadelphia's talent converts. The most decorated starting five in the league on paper is still judged in June, not November, and the franchise has not won a title since 1983.
  • The West's two-team problem. Oklahoma City and San Antonio have turned the conference finals into a rivalry, and the Thunder now have to answer a series they lost. Denver and Minnesota are the most credible interruptions.
  • The January drop. City Edition anniversary jerseys land in stores in January 2027. If you collect, that date matters more than the trade deadline.

Frequently asked questions

When does the 2026-27 NBA season start?

Opening night is Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, with a three-game slate on NBC and Peacock: Boston at Detroit (3 p.m. ET), Philadelphia at New York (7 p.m. ET) and Oklahoma City at San Antonio (9:30 p.m. ET). Training camps opened Sept. 29 and preseason games began Oct. 3.

Which NBA players changed jersey numbers in 2026?

Three stand out. Giannis Antetokounmpo moved from No. 34 to No. 7 after his trade to Miami, saying he wanted to leave 34 with Milwaukee. Klay Thompson returned to No. 11 with the Heat after wearing 31 in Dallas. LeBron James will wear No. 23 in Philadelphia, the number he wore in Cleveland and Los Angeles. Jaylen Brown, traded to the 76ers, kept No. 7.

Who won the 2026 NBA championship?

The New York Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the 2026 NBA Finals, winning their first title since 1973. Jalen Brunson was named Finals MVP after scoring 45 points in the title-clinching Game 5, a 94-90 win in San Antonio.

What is the NBA City Edition 10th anniversary?

The City Edition programme began in the 2017-18 season, Nike's first as the NBA's uniform supplier. For its tenth anniversary in 2026-27, teams are reissuing favourite designs from the previous nine seasons rather than launching new ones, with an iridescent Swoosh or Jumpman logo and the NBA logo moved to the back of the neck. The collection is expected in stores in January 2027.

Are Christmas Day jerseys returning in 2026-27?

Yes. The NBA is bringing back dedicated Christmas Day uniforms in 2026-27, the first time since Nike became the league's outfitter in 2017. The release is expected between November and December 2026, ahead of the five-game Christmas slate on ABC and ESPN.

When is the 2027 NBA All-Star Game?

All-Star Weekend 2027 is scheduled for Feb. 20-22, 2027 in Phoenix. The NBA trade deadline falls earlier in the season, on Feb. 11, 2027.

The season starts before the season starts

Between now and Oct. 20 there is nothing to watch on the floor — and that is precisely when basketball's visual identity gets decided. Numbers get assigned, new uniforms get photographed, rookies pose in shirts they will be remembered in. By the time the Knicks raise a banner on opening night, the season's most enduring images will already exist.

Start with the full NBA basketball jersey range, or go straight to the bestsellers and new arrivals as the 2026-27 stock lands.
